📁 Groups & Categories Guide
Groups help you categorize and organize your spending. Set budgets for each category and track where your money goes.
What are Groups?
Groups are categories for your transactions. Each group has a name, emoji, type (income/expense), and optional budget amount.

📥 Income Groups
Categories for money you receive
- 📜 Salary
- 💼 Freelance
- 🎁 Gifts
- 💰 Investments
- 🏦 Other Income
Creating Groups
- Go to Planning page
- Scroll to bottom of expense or income section
- Click "Add Group"
- Enter group name
- Choose emoji (optional)
- Set budget amount (for expense groups)
- Click "Create"
Setting Budgets
For expense groups, set a budget to limit spending in that category:
Budget Calculation:
Hooldbudget uses the higher of:
- Budget amount you set
- Actual spending in that group
This ensures your calculations reflect reality, not just plans.
Organizing Groups
Keep your groups organized:
- Reorder: Drag and drop to change order
- Rename: Click group to edit name
- Change emoji: Add visual identification
- Delete: Remove unused groups (deletes all transactions in that group)
Copying Groups to Future Periods
When you create a new period, groups are automatically copied. You can also:
- Copy from previous: Click "Copy groups from previous period"
- Sync budgets: Update budget amounts across future periods
Best Practices
- ✓ Start simple: Begin with 5-7 groups, add more as needed
- ✓ Be specific: "Groceries" and "Restaurants" instead of just "Food"
- ✓ Use emojis: Quick visual identification
- ✓ Set realistic budgets: Based on past spending, not wishes
